Cranfield University are developing metal 3D printing as part of a multi year grant with an aerospace consortium, including BAE, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Marshall Aerospace and various equipment suppliers including Fronius for the CMT welding system. The technology is called Wire Arc Additive Manufacture – WAAM. Materials used are aluminium, steel and titanium – they are machined back for accuracy or finish where needed, creating high quality parts without the waste caused by machining from solid billets of material.
The development uses the IO plugin with a custom scripted C# component that uses the our API to control the welding functions. See the video or details.
